Cattle Trade Ends Season With Notable Cattle Export Volumes

The 1899 western cattle shipping season closed after severe early drought and wet weather, yielding 81,038 head shipped from Manitoba and the Territories to Montreal and overseas markets, with total cattle trade at 67,000 when including stockers and eastbound shipments. The year notes stronger stocker movement and rising US demand, but warns that selling young cattle reduced domestic beef reserves.

Grain awards listed for Paris Fair exhibits

Eighteen societies sent grain exhibits to the Agriculture Department. Wheat winners include F. Gunningham Broadview and Alex Donaldson Fort Qu Appelle. Oats and barley honors went to P Grimski Churchbridge and L W Griffiths Monsomin among others. Judges were D Horn Winnipeg and A McKay Indian Head. Also noted are band nights at the rink and D H Andrews sailing to the Old Country to buy Galloway cattle, Halifax departure on the 4th prox.
