British Forces Hold Line Amid Entrenching Enemy Near Pickets
London dispatch reports no change in the overall situation. General Methune notes the enemy has increased forces and is entrenching three miles from his outlying pickets. His reconnaissance came under fire from four guns and two Vickers machine guns, with four horses hit. The Queen’s Christmas message drew enthusiasm. Gatacre seeks to reestablish contact with Indwen Collieries. In Gibraltar, the Dunottar Castle carrying General Roberts arrived, with Lord Kitchener aboard bound for Cape Town. At Pietermaritzburg, Gen White remains confident as relief is delayed, troops well provisioned and in good spirits. Boer attack on the British left was repelled, and defenders held to their lines.

Cattle Trade Ends Season With Notable Cattle Export Volumes
The 1899 western cattle shipping season closed after severe early drought and wet weather, yielding 81,038 head shipped from Manitoba and the Territories to Montreal and overseas markets, with total cattle trade at 67,000 when including stockers and eastbound shipments. The year notes stronger stocker movement and rising US demand, but warns that selling young cattle reduced domestic beef reserves.
