Pravda challenges the West to accept recent Soviet disarmament proposals and urges a direct Western reply. U S officials study Soviet bids including a ban on nuclear weapons, reduced forces in Central Europe, and a broader peace framework.
A Soviet snow-train of 10 tractors and 20 sledges departed Mirny Base toward the continent’s interior. Tass reports the third IGY expedition aims to establish Sovietskaya at the inaccessibility pole, far from the coastline, following prior inland stations Komsomolskaya and Vostok near the magnetic south pole.
Temperatures ranged from zero to twenty five below across Northern Alberta and most of Saskatchewan as a cold front moved southward. Southwestern Alberta escaped severe cold. A west system will push milder air back along a Red Deer to Swift Current line with cloud and light snow slowing temperature drops tonight.
An artist’s concept of the Long Beach shows a nuclear propelled surface warship being built at Bethlehem Steel in Quincy Massachusetts. The 100 million dollar cruiser will exceed 700 feet in length and displace about 14 000 tons with completion planned for 1961. It features multiple missile launchers and radar with no smoke stacks or main gun batteries.
In Cairo the Soviet Union offered extensive loans and aid to Afro Asian states and urged nationalization of foreign enterprises. The non governmental Afro Asian conference heard the Russian report calling for development aid without strings, criticizing U.S. aid, and supporting regional economic integration and disarmament.
Monroe Gibson 26 admitted striking Gerard Sarracini 30 with a single blow outside a Broadway tavern near 64th Street. Sarracini, Toronto actor and Romeo in Romanoff and Juliet, died from a brain concussion after the mugging. Fellow man Tommy Bell 34, a former boxer, was also involved as a passenger in the fight.
The Canadian Press reports at least 53 people died during the holiday period, with 38 traffic fatalities. Ontario had 10, Quebec 14, Nova Scotia 4 of eight, British Columbia five, New Brunswick two, Saskatchewan one, Newfoundland two drownings, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island no deaths.
Reuters reports London papers hail Queen Elizabeth after she delivers her first televised Christmas message. The Daily Mail calls it a seven minute triumph, noting she wrote the speech with Prince Philip. The Daily Herald praises a warmer natural delivery and directness while citing past criticisms of her speech mannerisms.
In Springhill Nova Scotia a Boxing Day fire destroyed ten downtown businesses and six homes, threatening much of the town's economy. Mayor Ralph Gilroy vowed to seek federal and provincial aid as 75 firefighters battled 40 mile per hour winds through five hours of flames amid falling rain.
A strong earthquake struck northwest Turkey near Izmit for four seconds, cracking walls and sending people into the streets in panic. A second tremor occurred about 20 minutes later with shocks felt across a wide area including Istanbul.
William John Paddy Hill 74, longtime Redcliff chief of police from 1937 to 1953, died at home of heart seizure. Born in Ireland March 6 1883 he moved to Redcliff in 1922. Survived by widow and daughter Maisie. Services at St Ambrose Anglican Redcliff Monday 1 30 p m burial Hillside Anglican. Pattison's Chapel hosts calls to noon Monday.
Trade Minister Churchill in a year end statement says exports and investment show no signs of a quick upturn. He notes a downward trend in production and employment with consumer demand likely to sustain the economy while capital expansion slows. He urges redirecting idle resources to new markets and public improvements through intensified planning.
Reginald Badry aged 19 died after his car ran out of gas in a snowstorm on Lac La Biche. Companion Don Tawlowich, 17, suffered severe frostbite and hiked miles to seek help. Badry was found dead in the car as rescuers arrived. Lac La Biche lies 115 miles northeast of Edmonton.
Lethbridge report says Sharon Sylsbe, 16, of Barons died in hospital ten hours after a car overturned near Picture Butte. RCMP said the vehicle left the road at a corner. Injured were Raymond Koenen and Karl Koenen of Iron Springs. Driver Clinton Warnock of Turin and Beverly Burns of Carmangay escaped injury.
