Huntsville reports a mother Mrs. Frank Marcum and her infant son died from exposure after four days in a snowbound mountain. Two daughters endured three more days, locating the bodies in a hollow log near their home. The father followed tracks to the log as physicians predicted the girls would recover from exposure.
Two eight year old Willie Culross and three year old Kearn were suffocated when their Toronto home burned early today. A maid inside the house escaped with an infant by leaping from an upstairs window. she could not reach the boys. The mother returned home as the fire raged, attempting to rescue her sons unsuccessfully. Lorne K. Culross of Stobie, Furlong and Co. in Vancouver is en route home.
Lord Byng former Governor General of Canada is much better and doctors are satisfied with his recovery from a lung ailment. His planned South Africa voyage is postponed to February to build up strength before the long sea trip.
Two youths waited for a vault opener at the California Bank branch in Bell. After finding no money at opening, they waited fifteen minutes and escaped with about $5,000 as a single employee struggled to access the vault.
Mrs Ellen Smart admitted taking her husband’s season ticket without his knowledge after arriving at Fen church street station from Laindon Essex. The Mansion House Lord Mayor fined her 10 shillings for travelling without paying fare.
In London on December 26 a special birthday fund is raised for Sir Frederick Milner president of the Ex-Services Welfare Piety. A large circle of friends seize on the occasion to show appreciation for his untiring work on behalf of ex service men. The event marks his 80th birthday with proceeds to support Village London activities.
Winnipeg dispatch records December 27 show grain inspections with 300 cars of wheat and 300 cars of contract grade, compared with 1 400 cars a year ago and no other cargo figures listed.
Humboldt Saskatchewan reports center of Christmas night shooting is Alex Wysochan who is not seriously wounded and remains in custody. He faces a preliminary trial January 2 for shooting Mrs Kropa. Coroner A Thompson and jury viewed Mrs Kropa’s remains as inquest was adjourned. Dr Lindsay to perform post mortem.
Winnipeg reports Hon. T. A. Crerar of United Grain Growers nearing appointment to the railways portfolio in the Dominion Cabinet. Ottawa sources foresee a New Year senatorship for Hon. Robert Parke, with Crerar possibly replacing him and contesting Brandon. Three by elections loom for Huntingdon Chateaugay and Brandon due to deaths and cabinet reshuffle.
James J. Gene Tunney, former world heavyweight champion, won a $500,000 breach of promise case filed by Mrs. Katherine King Fogarty. Judgment was entered in Superior Court in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Paris reports a secret Marshal Foch warning against premature Rhineland evacuation was disclosed in the Chamber of Deputies today. Foreign Minister Briand expressed astonishment at not being informed, noting the note was sent to President Doumergue and Prime Minister Poincare.
New York report from Adelaide states explorer Cecil Madigan has verified a vast salt lake named Lake Eyre in central Australia. He says the lake may be one of the world’s wonders and could hold at least 3,000,000,000 tons of salt in its northern region.
Merce Saskatchewan. Harry K re rner, 50, a storekeeper, hanged himself yesterday from the store basement ceiling. The death occurred in Merce on December 27. Policemen report no other details available.
In Vancouver on Boundary Road a man Sydney Ellard aged 35 killed his wife Eliza with a hammer and slashed her throat then slashed his own throat and wrists. A note left for the milkman warned of the plan to kill his wife and take his life and the milkman notified police. The scene also revealed Mrs Herbert Wheeler an invalid in bed who had been cared for by the Ellards.
London December 26 reports a lively clash between Philip Snowden and Winston Churchill in the British commons on Christmas Eve. The quarrel focused on safeguarding duties, with witty exchanges and a light mood prevailing over deeper policy disputes. Churchill and Snowden traded sharp jibes, while both upheld public personas amid the holiday crowd. In Canada, Kamloops, Lieutenant J R Vicars of the 172d RM Battalion dies at sixty after a long illness.

Nome Alaska December 27 ten aeroplanes and at least sixteen fliers from three nations prepared for a search for Carl Ben Eielson and Earl Borland missing since November 9 in the Siberian and Teller Alaska region. Canadian and Russian crews joined the effort with Fairchild cabin planes ready for a 400 mile flight to the Seward Peninsula amid harsh cold and murky skies. The Soviet aviation authorities urged northeastern Siberia residents to help and offered 2000 roubles for information guiding rescuers to the missing aviators.
Ottawa reports Canada will redeem in cash a twenty million dollar loan due February 1. In his first radio address as minister of finance, Charles Dunning outlined the growth of Dominion revenue over 60 years and the need for ongoing balance between security and flexibility in handling money and bonds. He paid tribute to his predecessor J A Robb and sought public cooperation.

The Central Political Council in an emergency meeting decided to issue an official mandate on January 1 declaring the abolition of extraterritoriality in China. Coronade Sask December 27 Charles Waldron 46 who ran a dairy farm one mile south of Coronade shot himself in the head with a revolver in the barn hayloft. He was in financial trouble and left a widow and six children. He formerly resided at Morse Sask.
Agriculturists from Western Canada gather at University of Alberta for the Western Canadian Society of Agronomy two day convention. Thirty five delegates attend with an address by M J Tinlin of the Dominion Experimental Farm Brandon and a symposium on barley improvement and production.
Medicine Hat candidates for the third year High School exams of 1929 are eligible for four percent diploma with honors. Honors require an average of 75 in twenty one units. Names listed include Phyllis Grace Gerow Wallace Harper Gwendoline Hepburn Varley Mulligan Annie Sadownik John Louch M A W Western R L Hewitt Graham Wanless James Willson. Fourth year honorees include Florence Johnson Hilda Raytrice McEwen John Woznow and others.
Canadian Press reports Conservative leader Hon. R. B Bennett will tour Western Canada next month. Open in Vancouver January 14 with Victoria January 15 and Kamloops January 17, then Winnipeg and other stops in Manitoba Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
