Ottawa reports eleven Prince Edward Island mussel poisoning victims remain in hospital on the eve of Christmas. Doctors say recovery is slow though not worsening. Over 100 cases traced to late November and early December. two or three elderly patients died after hospital admission.
Vancouver longshoremen fear job losses as the federal government plans to abolish the container clause on January 1, extinguishing a rule that let dock workers unpack inbound containers bound for sites beyond consignee premises. Local 500 president Louis Kaufman warned of unrest.
Israeli troops were authorized to shoot to hit as riots across the Gaza and West Bank intensified, with 21 Palestinians killed and 158 wounded while 31 soldiers and 19 civilians were injured. The army closed four colleges for a month and ordered grade schools shut until Sunday, affecting about 350,000 pupils.

In Wilkie Saskatchewan Walby, now 67, has played Santa for 30 years. He started after wartime service in England when a school bombing killed 38 children and six teachers, inspiring a lifelong charity to children. He uses a pony and lights for Rudolph, visits nursing homes and clubs, and even donned Santa in summer for a friend’s August sale.
