In Cannes France December 1917 letters threatening Mrs Wallis Simpson for causing Edward abdication are still received at the Riviera village where she lies. Mrs Simpson tore up many letters and spurned police-handed warnings while declaring she is not afraid of poison pen writers.
London reports a renewed rapprochement after months of dispute nearly sparking war. Britain and Italy expect to declare a shared aim to uphold the Mediterranean status quo. Mussolini seeks British recognition of Ethiopia’s conquest before rejoining the League, easing British anxieties.
Mrs Christina Maud Pogmore was sentenced to hang on March 8 for the murder of her husband George Pogmore on their Bymoor Alberta farm. Emmanuel Ernst, a former hired man, is also to hang the same day after testifying that he shot Pogmore by agreement with Pogmore. The jury recommended mercy.
Edward Spangenberger warned painters against flashy decor in a meeting, urging restraint with room color choices. He cautioned about hanging heavy patterns on walls and suggested avoiding “wild” wallpaper while favoring ivory, cream, or baby blue tones.

Justice A A McGillivray wrote the court held Bery K Azakewich need not pay wife Mary $4 weekly support. Magistrate D Cameron Sinclair had ordered the payment. The couple are separated.
About 60 taxpayers attended the Excelsior municipal district meeting at City Hall. W J Hilworth chaired as A V Keynes reported on 1935 36 operations including taxes collected, hospital and relief costs, administration cuts, Larkhall reservoir issues, water rights withdrawal, and plans to fund the Central Alberta Sanatorium debt.
Five people died when a dawn blaze swept a four story brownstone on West 73rd Street. Four burned inside the building and one man leaped from a third floor window to escape. A man smoking in bed is blamed for starting the fire. he escaped.
London December 17 The question of the proper precedence for the Duke of Windsor remains unresolved. Reports from informed quarters indicate he would likely rank below the Duke of Kent, king's youngest brother, as Windsor holds a royal dukedom and the latest created.
An underground explosion at the Poidsh colliery near Asansol on the East Indian Railway reportedly trapped 150 miners, Dodds described as the European manager. Rescue efforts were underway as authorities confirmed the incident and feared casualties.

City police investigate a burglary at Family Grocery on Seventh Avenue. Entry was gained by breaking the front door lock after failed attempts on a rear door. Cigarettes and tobacco valued at 75 dollars were stolen from a showcase. no other items appear taken.
Ottawa reports three federation delegations pressed Canada to seek Soviet Russia’s trial in Geneva for disseminating Communistic propaganda through trade channels. Justice Minister Lapointe rejected Bolshevik-style handling, saying democracy must win workers’ support. Unemployment estimates rose to 11 percent with public works proposed to reduce joblessness.

Edith Maxwell, 22, a former school teacher from Wise Virginia, was convicted of second degree murder in the death of her father, Trigg Maxwell. The jury fixed a twenty year sentence after a prior first degree murder conviction was overturned by the state supreme court. The prosecutor said Maxwell struck him with a blunt instrument, likely while he slept.
Edmonton Dec 1910 Alberta government will shut its Montreal trade office on December 31 Hon Dr Crogs acting Minister of Trade announced. The sales staff associated with N J Talt will be terminated. No reason given or future policy outlined while Alberta’s Toronto office will continue. The Montreal outlet aimed to push coal and other products in eastern Canada.
Fresh-cut flowers from Edmonton will decorate two Christmas tables at Aklavik north of the Arctic Circle if delivered. A parcel wrapped in cotton wool and paper arrived today on a heated plane. The flowers are a gift from Mrs. J. A. Clarke wife of Edmonton's mayor to Mrs. J. A. Urquhart wife of the federal government physician at Aklavik.
Maryse Hiltz, who last summer set French altitude records for both men and women, was seriously hurt in a parachute jump near Istres. Her ship had motor trouble during a trial flight and she bailed out, landing in a swamp and breaking two ribs along with multiple lacerations.
