Prisoners Seize Hallway In Regina Jail Remand Unit

An overnight standoff at Regina Correctional Centre ended at dawn after 12 to 17 inmates occupied a remand unit hallway. They claimed a hostage hoax with ketchup blood to draw attention to remand unit conditions, while two inmate spokesmen denied any hostage situation. A prisoner was injured, reportedly a slip. Negotiations followed until reporters were allowed access.

Quake Shakes Northwestern Canada Felt Across Region

A 6.9 magnitude quake centered about 510 kilometres west of Yellowknife rattled Alberta and nearby areas on Sunday night. People in Edmonton Grande Prairie and Juneau reported feeling movement while Medicine Hat residents noted minor swaying and tinkling of wind chimes with no damages or injuries reported. Local officials said there were no evident impacts despite the widespread sensory tremor.
