Charter Airliner Plunges Into Icy Monongahela River
A chartered DC-3 with a crew of five and 23 Army veterans plunged into the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh. Ten men were missing hours later while others were rescued. the pilot and several crew members survived. Rescuers formed human chains to pull survivors from the icy water as the plane sank in about 12 feet. The pilot reported running out of gas before impact.

Three Bettelson Children Die in Closet Fire
In Austin Minnesota a nine year old girl Janice and her five year old twin brothers Donald and Harold Bettelson died Wednesday night in a closet fire apparently started as they used matches to peek at Christmas gifts. Their mother Mrs Donald Bettelson saved one 18 month old boy Chris but was driven back by smoke and flame. Coroner B J Cromwell said match stubs found indicate the children were burning matches to uncover gifts.
