The Montreal Gazette reports the federal government paid 4.93 million dollars for 61 of 799 public opinion polls ordered in four years. Each survey cost between 4 thousand and 700 thousand dollars, averaging about 80 thousand dollars, obtained via access to information laws.
The B C Court of Appeal upheld four-week suspensions of John and Ilse Shewan, Abbotsford teachers, over a semi nude photograph in Gallery Magazine. Chief Justice Nemetz ordered the pair to pay Abbotsford school district costs, ruling their conduct violated acceptable teaching standards.
Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench Judge Bernard Coleman releases a 28 page decision finding that a restaurant owner discriminated against Douglas Parisian a blind man by not permitting his guide dog to sit with him. The ruling awards Parisian $300 for the June 1985 incident.
George Lee Chuvalo, 25, son of boxer George Chuvalo, received a four year prison term after Ontario Court of Appeal nearly doubled his sentence on a terrorizing, drug motivated robbery. The Crown had appealed an initial 23 month reformatory term.
Canada defeated Finland 4-1 to capture the Izvestia tournament title, finishing with a 4-1 victory that followed a 3-2 upset of the Soviet Union. The win gives Canada 41 points in the six-team round robin as they head toward Calgary.
A four year old boy emerged alive today on a piece of lumber two days after the Dona Paz ferry collided with a tanker and sunk off Mindoro Island. Officials say eight bodies were found and more than 1,500 are missing in what may be the era’s worst peacetime maritime disaster. The survivor, reportedly placed on the timber by his father, was rescued by a fisherman and taken to a Mindoro hospital, becoming the 27th known survivor.
Israel increased troop deployments in the West Bank and Gaza as leaders pledge a hard line after two weeks of unrest that has left at least 20 Arabs dead. Reports note a 10 year old girl shot and curfews in Yatta and Al Amari camp while protests and barricades continue.

Amoco Canada Petroleum won Investment Canada approval to buy Dome Petroleum in a $5.5 billion deal. CEO Don Stacy called the move crucial as Ottawa noted net benefits to Canada while opposition MPs criticized the sale to a U.S. company. Amoco must reinvest $2.5 billion in five years and fund $100 million in R and D.
