The energy crisis could push up Canada’s food costs, especially for U S fruits and vegetables, though officials say the impact may be limited. The Food Prices Review Board urges priority energy allocation to agriculture and notes price rises since mid 1973 while confirming no profiteering in food distribution.
Ottawa CP report on guides for a control free period during foreign investment screening stages under the Foreign Investment Review Act. Industry Minister Alastair Gillespie tabled the guides in Commons, while critics from Conservative and NDP called them weak and open to interpretation. They warned multinationals could use subsidiaries for free expansion without screening as the act is proclaimed and implemented. The act will affect Canadian acquisitions and new field investments, with the first part to take effect in three to four months.
Prime Minister Trudeau announced Deputy Commissioner Maurice J. Nadon is appointed commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Nadon, 53, has 32 years with the force and will succeed W. L. Higgitt who retires December 31. Nadon’s career spanned Ottawa Montreal Quebec City Rimouski and Ontario assignments. He led criminal investigation work and the Quebec sub-division before rising to deputy commissioner in 1972. He serves on the International Association of Chiefs of Police executive.
The Supreme Court of Canada refused a motion by James Bay Indians to halt work on Quebec’s James Bay power project and declined a review of a Quebec Court of Appeals decision suspending the injunction. Chief Justice Fauteux and Justices Abbott Judson form the majority with a 3-2 ruling, Martland and Ritchie dissented. The chief justice noted Indians could seek reinstatement of the halted order if James Bay Corp fails to proceed diligently in the appeal.
Ottawa reports Justice Minister Otto Lang, with Conservative support, won a compromise replacing a Senate rejected section of Canada’s wiretap bill. The pact aims to allow police taps only with a judge’s order and to require notification to any affected person when in the interests of justice and privacy. The agreement reconciles Liberal Conservative aims, with NDP opposition remaining.
AMA road report notes Highway 1 west to Brooks is bare and dry while east to Maple Creek is bare and wet with slippery sections. Highways 3, 41, 36 and 48 are bare and dry. Highway 2 from Calgary to Edmonton is bare and wet with sections of black ice.
Medicine Hat mayor predicts population could reach 40 000 in five or six years with the $80 million nitrogen fertilizer plant. The project may spark a Medicine Hat Redcliff merger while creating 200 to 250 jobs and driving regional economic growth. Construction to begin next year aims for early 1976 production, with gas supply secured and federal incentives pursued. The plant plans a 400 car rail fleet and possible CP Rail freight improvements.
