The Senate banking committee returns the large government tax bill to the Senate without amendments. The panel expresses confidence a soft sell will win government support and expects passage by Thursday or sooner. Enactment targeted for the New Year as the 739 page bill nears final approval.
Toronto police with provincial and Mississauga officers arrested three suspects in a motel room after a Windsor bank robbery loot of 1,129,000 dollars was found in a blue metal trunk. William Ferguson, George Ivan Davidson, and Edna Simpson face possession of stolen property charges and the two men also face a firearm charge. Additional arrests in Windsor were reported but not confirmed by Toronto police. The suspects were surprised as the trunk was opened and money overflow filled a pillowcase.
Ottawa says the post office posted a 1970 71 deficit of 100.6 million dollars with 35 million blamed on a four month postal workers strike that reduced mail volumes. Revenue fell to 432.9 million and costs rose to 533.5 million as inflation and expanding operations drove expenses. Mail volume declined to 4.5 billion pieces from 4.8 billion.

Canada will join the United States and 10 European nations in a 200 million satellite test for aircraft communications and control over the North Atlantic. Ottawa pledges about 1014 million for phase one of a five year program starting 1974, funding geostationary satellites and a ground station in eastern Canada. Air Canada and CP Air will install new equipment aboard several aircraft at about 80000 per unit. If successful, a global network costing nearly 2 billion with a dozen satellites could be in operation by 1980, reducing Canada’s ground based control sites. A controller in Toronto could speak directly to an aircraft over Edmonton. Current Very High Frequency ground networks are limited by line of sight.
Environment Minister Jack Davis argues Western Liberals reject division into small states and barriers at the border. He says they favor multi cultural, multinational outlooks, free flow of goods and ideas, and prefer trading with the United States as a key market to fund imports and growth.
RCMP seized about 200 pounds of hashish imported from Pakistan at the port of Saint John valued between 1.25 and 1.5 million dollars. Four United States citizens were arrested and will face court this afternoon. It is considered the second largest drug seizure in Canadian history.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan's first civilian leader in 13 years, pledged to restore democracy and seek revenge on India after the war that led to East Pakistan becoming Bangla Desh. He urged patience, called for India to withdraw from the east, and appealed for funds to arm Pakistan's military. Police used tear gas to quell protests in Rawalpindi, Lahore and Peshawar.
The Canadian Air Line Employees Association says a conciliation board report eases the threat of a national strike by 2000 Air Canada passenger agents who have been working to rule since December 15. If Air Canada accepts, the report moves to ratification. rejection could trigger intensified work to rule and a strike vote. The two-year deal would start with an eight percent wage rise the first year and seven percent the second.
