Havana sources say Fidel Castro jailed about 40 pro-Soviet Communist party members including a central committee member for opposing exporting revolution. The dissidents favored a Soviet style focus on domestic economic problems and opposed eliminating material rewards for workers.
A press statement says the cause of death was respiratory failure from bilateral pneumonia, confirmed by post mortem. Doctors noted no circulatory trouble, liver returned to normal, and that infection challenged the surgical team. Washkansky, 53, remained conscious most of Wednesday night before death.
Louis Washkansky died after an 18 day struggle and his funeral will be held Friday at Pine lands Jewish Cemetery in Cape Town. Chief Rabbi I Abrahams will give the address and the service will follow traditional Jewish rites. A week of mourning will be observed from today with private prayers at the Washkansky home. A 10-year-old boy who received a kidney from Denise Darvall after a traffic accident is reported in satisfactory condition in hospital. His mother expresses sorrow over Louis Washkansky death after receiving Miss Darvall's heart two weeks earlier. Jonathan Van Wyk, who got the kidney on December 3, remains in good condition as doctors report his kidney functioning well.
In Canberra the South Vietnamese president Thieu and U.S. President Johnson publicly stated that Johnson’s peace proposals align with Thieu’s government policy. They issued a joint statement to dispel any notion of conflict and discussed informal talks with the National Liberation Front. Thieu reaffirmed readiness to discuss matters with NL F members while rejecting the Front as an independent entity. Johnson said the war could end quickly if Thieu’s informal talks proceed and mutual accords are observed.
