Preparations for the Christmas mail avalanche at Medicine Hat post office include two temporary recruits per carrier and nine full time temporary sorters. Daily mail volume reaches tens of thousands of letters and up to 1,500 packages, with a deadline for two cent letters past but possible improvement noted for first class mail deposited by 5 am on Dec 24 for Christmas delivery.
A Pacific-bound Pine Ridge tanker with about 40 crew members was torn in half 90 miles east of Cape Hatteras as violent seas battered the ship. The stern remained afloat, while crew members fought for survival in the water and aboard the stern. Rescue efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard, Navy and other vessels shifted as planes dropped survival gear and new ships converged on the scene.

Richard Baer, ex 1944 45 Auschwitz commandant, faces murder charges for the Nazi extermination of millions of Jews. Arrested near Hamburg, Baer admitted his rank and demanded treatment. Investigators traced his identity after a 10 000 mark reward drew tips. Sixteen former SS guards remain in custody. more arrests expected.
In County Court Vancouver a woman, Sylvia Shannon, was acquitted of possessing narcotics found in planters on her penthouse roof garden. She claimed the drugs belonged to Toronto gangland victim Floyd Gibson, executed last month. The judge ruled no trafficking charge.
Melvin L Rogers, 85, a Canadian pensioner who used two crutches, was struck and killed while walking in the centre of the highway in Campbell River British Columbia on a Tuesday night. He had warned others of the danger. He replied that everyone must go sometime.
Prime Minister Diefenbaker announced a royal commission will be established to study Canada's health needs. He said the scope and authority of the commission and its personnel will be announced early in the new year.
A U.S. tax official said the United States will raise the withholding tax on dividends from Canadian controlled companies operating in the U.S. from five to 15 percent starting January 1, as retaliation for Canada's tax boost on American companies. The move targets Canadian controlled entities only and would require new legislation to apply to Canadian branches. American investment in Canada remains about four times Canada’s investment in the United States.

An Ottawa official rejects a Washington report claiming the United States would hike taxes on dividends from Canadian subsidiaries in retaliation for Canada’s new tax on American operations. Finance Minister Fleming had raised the withholding tax on such dividends to 15 percent from five in Tuesday night’s budget.
Premier Bennett of British Columbia said the federal baby budget should create a low interest pool to spur Canadian investment in Canadian projects. He criticized the budget at a ferry wharf en route to Vancouver and said foreign investment restrictions won’t affect the 458 million Columbia River development plan with most funds raised in Canada.

Elvis Presley also gets a sour apple for his manager Col Tom Parker, with Nannle Fabray Janet Leigh and Jack Lemmon sharing golden apples for cooperation.
Ten persons remain in hospital after injuries from the November 29 crash of a school bus and a train at a level crossing in LAMON ALIA CP. Seventeen students were killed in the accident. Two or three more injured students may resume studies in hospital after Christmas.
Canada’s economy rose modestly in the third quarter with Gross National Product at an annual rate of 35.272 billion dollars, up less than 0.5 percent from the second quarter. The gain followed a budget forecast cut, as higher demand drew down inventories rather than boosting production. Exports and domestic purchases both rose sharply while nine-month GNP averaged 2.9 percent above 1959.
Two light planes collided in overcast weather southwest of Hamilton Montana killing all three on board. Victims were Robert Ryman 37 his wife Donna 30 and Norman Ray 45 a Grantsdale area well driller and farmer. Ryman headed north toward Hamilton airport while Ray flew a southerly course at about 1000 feet.
