Austro German forces push back in Monte Asolone region but Italians recover part of lost ground. Italian lines hold steady along the balance of the front as the fighting continues.
GERMANS FEAR OFFENSIVE report says Italian forces recaptured a significant sector gained by the enemy on Tuesday in the Monte Asolone region east of the Brenta river. Canadian fronts note quiet is relative as German morale remains high amid a defensive posture and redeployment claims. Heavier artillery fights persist along Verdun and at eastern line points including Martmanweilerkopf area.
Reports from Sydney and Melbourne indicate the conscription proposal has been defeated in Australia by about 120000 votes with Victoria reversing last year’s stance by a 1500 vote against the measure. Half the ballots counted show the tally near half a million for conscription amid widespread division.
At Atlanta Tabernacle Billy Sunday exchanged blows with a German sympathizer during a revival. The intruder, larger by over fifty pounds, attacked first, Sunday countered with rapid punches, and the crowd forced the fighters apart as the clash escalated in the midiken of the service.
Ottawa reports most ministers will leave the capital after cabinet meetings to spend Christmas at home. Prime Minister plans a rest in the south, with departure possible over the weekend. Hon. N W Rowell leaves for Toronto tonight as the cabinet clears remaining business.
The Prime Minister received a cable from Hon. W F Massey of New Zealand praising Canada's election result as a triumph for the Imperial cause. Massey says Canadians are determined to defend the Empire and bring the fight for freedom to a successful conclusion. He extends hearty congratulations to the senior Dominion.
Poll report indicates Hon. A. L. Sifton increased his lead by eleven votes in Falkner Poll No. 18 tallying twelve for Sifton one for Reilly and none for Paton. Sifton’s overall majority rises from 98 of 184 polls to 2382 as coverage notes. The American Tobacco Co expects to issue 50 million dollars in additional stock soon.
By December 27, notices from the government are expected to inform men under the Military Service Act when and where to report for active service. The Ontario registrar’s office says notices will go out in a few days. In Montreal it is calculated that ten thousand men will be called from military district No 1 to the colors on January 3.
Capt Demers leads Domixion Wreck-Godtals to Halifax to investigate a collision that caused disaster. Official inquiry seeks cause and any injuries or damages resulting from the incident.
Ottawa dispatch reports German rejection of peace terms while Major General Watson confirms local setup for enforcing the Military Service Act. Draft notices go to January 3 recruits. registrar instructions urge immediate notices in most districts with depot battalions handling reporting. Many called up in early increments. exact overseas troop numbers withheld for security. Also notes Grand Duke Nicholas leads a royalist counter-revolution marching from the Caucasus with a large army, intensifying Russian turmoil.
Special officers were dispatched to Verner and Sturgeon Falls after reports that scrutineers were attacked on the way home from polling places. Some were badly beaten and authorities sought assistance from the Militia. The incident was referred to provincial authorities.
Edmonton December report shows Brig. Gen. Griesbach, Unionist, leading Liberal Hon. F. Oliver by 45 votes with 34 polls remaining. Liberal gains could tilt the riding. Note 79 Oliver votes at McLellan were invalid due to ballot paper shortages and rejected ballots.

J E Davies of the A Young Gry company is chosen to head the committee due to his Nova Scotia roots and local knowledge.
