London reports a plan to keep industry running in wartime. Minister Ernest Brown states a national service register of reserved occupations will guide recruiting, prioritizing shipbuilding, munition work, mining, and public utilities to prevent loss of skilled labor.
London dispatch reports heavy European winter toll with ships struck by ferry and dredge in Lisbon’s Tagus river causing 25 deaths of 70 passengers. Cold weather blamed for over 20 deaths and at least three seafarers reported missing.
At the organization meeting of the School Board Dr. H C Dixon and W A Church were sworn in along with new member T Graham. Church was chosen chairman and J Mc Callum reappointed secretary treasurer. Dixon named delegate to Alberta Trustees Association convention in Edmonton January 12-18. Elgin Bell thanked for service.
At the last council meeting Alderman Black presented an illuminated address to Mayor Bullivant, praising his 13 years as chief magistrate. Bullivant spoke of Black’s steady council service, noted his own financial stewardship, and wished success to his successor.
New York December report shows Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia assaulted from behind on the city hall steps. A gray haired man, later tentatively identified as J Hagen, was overpowered after a struggle and taken into the secretary’s office. The mayor, noting the assailant had hounded him for years, did not elaborate on motive.
A United States Coast Guard aircraft crashed near Boerne, Texas, about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio, on December 20, killing four crew members. The disaster prompted investigations and funeral arrangements for the deceased.
