Finance Minister Michael Wilson announced a seven percent goods and services tax, down from nine percent, to curb inflation risk. The move funds itself with spending cuts and higher corporate taxes while keeping cigarettes and alcohol taxes unchanged.
Nova Corporation of Alberta plans a 45 million 1990 investment for a new natural gas compression station near Empress with construction starting in April and operation slated for November. The project, part of a 538 million capital budget for 1990, includes related lateral pipelines and meter stations and is expected to boost Medicine Hat area business and job opportunities.
The Panamanian Defence Forces denounce the US lieutenant's shooting of a policeman as reckless aggression. The incident follows Saturday's fatal shooting of an American officer and amid US military alert and Bush administration threats of possible retaliation against Gen. Manuel Noriega. A US statement says the Panamanian approached a laundry near Southern Command and fired after the policeman moved to stop him. The Panamanian side claims the US vehicle sped away, heightening clashes as Noriega faces cocaine trafficking charges.
Witnesses report gunfire in Timisoara with security forces killing dozens during anti-government rioting that surged from the weekend. Unconfirmed tolls reach hundreds as reports of helicopter fire surface and unrest spreads to Arad and Brasov.
Alberta Treasurer Dick Johnston said loans from Alberta Treasury Branches to Peter Pocklington for Palm Dairies Ltd are fully secured. He commented on CBC Radio that Pocklington may sell Palm for 100 million and noted the Treasury Branches' position must be protected, with current balance unclear.
A court heard that a senior Mountie and a government official may have tainted the budget leak inquiry. Police say he killed 410 Jews and 8 Poles in Byelorussia in 1942 and 400 Jews in Snow village plus 80 Poles in the region. Bail hearing planned.
