Scots greet first Canadian contingent overseas in Britain

In a fog shrouded Scottish port and Mon aco a cheering crowd welcomed 2000 members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force as they disembarked. Major-General A G L McNaughten led the contingent, stating the mission is difficult but necessary as Anthony Eden and Vincent Massey attended the official greetings with other British and Canadian officials.

Halifax Four Women and One Man Charged with Spying Letters

Halifax police charge four women and one man with trying to communicate information likely to prejudice Canada’s war effort. Stricter Bicycle Regulations Passed By Medicine Hat Council

The Medicine Hat council approved bylaws regulating bicycle operation. New rules require headlights and red reflectors after sunset, forbid riding abreast except when passing, cap speed at 15 mph and 10 mph on turns, and set a bicycle license fee increase from 35 to 50 cents to cover plate and clerical costs.

Niblock Elected School Board Chairman At Year Start

At the annual organization meeting C W Niblock was named chairman and W W Oliver named vice chairman. The board announced Christmas break from December 22 to January 3 and Niblock was named delegate to the Alberta Trustees convention in Calgary January 24 25 26. The board approved 120 to a fund to provide milk for undernourished school children starting next year.

The council discussed housing 500 air force trainees, with Connaught school or the Badminton building as potential sites. Officials asked the finance and schools to assess feasibility, while awaiting government guidance on suitable large facilities near population centers. Winnipeg boxer charged with murder in Brooklyn

Ernest Kehler alias Haas, 24, amateur boxer from Winnipeg, held in Toronto for New York police on a murder warrant. He allegedly beat Walter Engelberg, 42, secretary of the German consulate, to death in a Brooklyn home on December 6. Police say motive cited as resentment over improper advances.

Rotary Club Votes Milk Aid for Local Schools

At a Monday meeting the Rotary Club approved a 500 grant to fund milk for children in the Public and Separate School Boards during winter. Pupils will be chosen by the school nurse and teachers. Miss Marjorie Smith of Alexandra High School spoke as Rotary Scholar in Grade Ten, noting her 88.3 percent year average with 35 credits and her Governor-General’s medal and AHS scholarship.

Community War Council Plans Red Cross Work in Medicine Hat

Representatives from 21 affiliated organizations met at the Medicine Hat Red Cross branch to coordinate war relief efforts.
