After more than 11 months without a contract custodians and housekeepers of Medicine Hat Catholic schools reached a tentative agreement with the board. All 17 CUPE Local 829 workers will vote on the memorandum tonight. Details were not disclosed pending board briefing.
The Board of Commissioners unveils a five year capital plan totaling about $94.4 million from 1986 to 1990 with 80 percent for self supporting utility projects led by the gas utility. Annual spends average roughly $18.9 million as council reviews detailed 12 area projects and financing.
Alberta Gas Chemicals Ltd announces a $100 million Medicine Hat plant expansion to produce 1 070 tonnes daily of anhydrous ammonia. The project adds 50 permanent jobs and 300 construction positions, with construction set for 1985 and completion in early 1987.
Mayor Ted Grimm Alderman Ken Sauer and Karen Green push to keep the Cultural Centre as a city college venture with a long term contract. The current agreements expire this month and discussions aim to define clear future commitments and governance. A joint committee previously oversaw operations and now the city hopes a formal agreement solidifies the arrangement beyond ten years. The $5.6 million project was split with the college covering just over half. A $244000 balance remains in a city trust account from a proposed expansion funded partly by the city.
Petrofina Canada offered 91 employees a share option at 60 dollars a share on Aug 22 1980. Nine months later the stock doubled to 120 dollars amid takeover speculation by Petro-Canada. Pierre Nadeau earned at least 480000 from 8000 shares plus 575000 earlier, with a total gain over 1 million dollars shared by 90 others from 171500 shares, all while denying illegal insider trading.
Ed Broadbent was expelled from the House after he accused Prime Minister Mulroney of lying when Broadbent refused to withdraw his remark. MPs voted 119 to 42 and Broadbent can return today without apologizing. Mulroney insisted he did not say social programs cannot be afforded.
