Ottawa reports the maximum interest rate on government guaranteed housing loans is increased to 6 percent to attract private lenders. The move, first in three years, will raise 25 year payments on a 12000 loan by about 6.95 monthly, with $12800 maximum. Walker says private banks and insurers will resume lending to home builders while government maintains some direct lending.
Victoria CP reports a British Columbia commissioner urges that Doukhobors pay rent on lands they occupy and face eviction if they do not buy. He proposes selling at market value after December 31, 1960, and designating a month to month tenancy until sale. The report targets 18 000 acres with 12 500 Doukhobors including 2 500 Sons of Freedom members amid rare sales under existing offer.
Western Allies move toward an integrated warning system for Western Europe but face a dispute with France over placing its air force under NATO command. Diego Brumini a 29 year old Yugoslav surveyor who escaped to Italy after stealing a police launch and overpowering guards is to be treated in Canada for tuberculosis. He and his wife Smilijanka are among 100 refugees sponsored by Canada during World Refugee Year arriving from Rome to Halifax and Saint John.
United Steelworkers President David J. McDonald said the union will seek court action to compel steel companies to bargain individually. The union had asked on Dec. 10 for company-wide talks to resume and received no response. Arthur J. Goldberg noted under federal law firms must deal individually since contracts are company-wide.
R S McBride longtime manager of the T Eaton Co Medicine Hat store has been named manager of the Eaton store in Port Arthur Ontario. He will assume duties late next month and is succeeded by William R McFetridge at Saskatoon.
Two survivors from a B-47 and an F-102 crash in northern Ontario were pulled from the wreckage. Roy N. Minor, 34, of Manchester Tennessee, and Lieut Theodore C. Adams, 24, of Greenville South Carolina, were reported in good condition. Adams was airlifted for medical care. Minor is believed aboard a rescue helicopter. Searchers continued for two other crew members, with wreckage located 42 miles northeast of Pagwa. The pilots named are Gaylord B. Treau, 27, Garner Iowa. Lloyd A. Horn, 27, Boise Idaho. and Carleton W. Hunt, 26, Oklahoma City Oklahoma. The planes collided at about 1 15 pm at 30 000 feet during a routine training mission involving Canadian and U S aircraft. Rescue teams linked to the Pagwa radar station guided the effort. a parachute was spotted in a tree and one survivor seen walking in the snow.
In Toronto an east end church hall turkey dinner served to seniors hospitalized for food poisoning. Twenty one people were affected nine at East General and four at Toronto General. fifteen sought care in doctors offices. Five turkeys were prepared at home and served with scalloped potatoes frozen vegetables mince pie and cream. Police interview the women’s committee and health officials took dinner remains for analysis.
In Honolulu AP report, a US carrier and destroyer reached a Dutch tug and two small carriers adrift in stormy Pacific with 41 seamen aboard. Rescue efforts stalled as 20 to 30 foot waves battered the area south of Midway Island with seas still unsettled.
