Government Majority and Laurier-Liberals Sweep

The government majority stands at 2,323 with Hon. A L Sifton securing a large tally. The union government is endorsed by voters across six provinces including Quebec Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island with strong support west of the Great Lakes.

Soldiers Vote Returns After New Year In Dominion

Ottawa reports added returns from the west and other regions show limited shifts in the federal election. Laurier supporters may gain from one to three seats in the west, Skeena B C Liberal Stork leads Unionist Col Peck by about five hundred, and Victoria Alta Liberal White leads by sixty nine with nineteen polls remaining.

Unclear wartime bulletin reports little action

Official dispatches say there is no special news to report. The front lines show virtual inactivity with occasional bombardments and minor raids. Only the Italian front in the north shows any notable activity, while other sectors remain quiet.

Sifton Victorious in Medicine Hat Electors’ Vote

Hon A L Sifton won the Medicine Hat constituency by a large majority as results trickled in from outlying polls. City districts boosted him with a 1708 margin in Medicine Hat and Redcliff added 191, while Feldman’s Lake gave him a unanimous 36 0 vote. Outside polls show a likely small overall majority around two to three hundred. Women played a major role in turnout and campaign work, with over 2700 votes cast in the city and returns processed efficiently by W B Smith, the returning officer. Continued on Page Eight.

Doherty says Quebec will accept verdict

Montreal dispatch reports Justice Minister C. J. Doherty stating Quebec will loyally accept Canada’s conscription verdict. He urged Canadians to be generous and conciliatory toward minority groups in victory and said the Military Service Act will continue to be implemented as planned.

Buchanan Leads by Over 1700 in Lethbridge Contest

Early returns from 55 of 88 polls show W A Buchanan with a 1700 plus lead and a conceded election in Lethbridge. The city grants him a 1836 majority, Taber posts 109 in his favor, while Mormon towns back Liberal L J Pack. Major firms are listed.
