Royal assent given new anti dumping legislation aimed at export of textiles from U S. The Commons adjourned until Tuesday Jan 19. Christmas carols conclude session. Canada and the United States end a month long air dispute with the U S agreeing to remove curbs on a LC A link with Mexico City. Canada withdraws retaliatory threats against two American airlines flying over Canadian airspace. Transport Minister Chevrier says the U S will cooperate and allows T C A to use Tampa Florida as a stop over on Mexican flights.
Christmas carols filled the Parliament Buildings railway committee room as MPs and senators with their wives shared in a year end reception. Santa circulated among guests wishing a merry Christmas and a happy New Year hosted by Hon. Rene Beaudoin Speaker of the Commons before the holiday recess.
Health Minister Martin declined to comment on U S reports linking lung cancer to cigarette smoking. He said Canadian cancer research looks into a possible connection. He added that the work is conducted by various cancer research bodies, not by the health department, and these bodies receive federal aid.
The Commons approved a financial agreement with Britain on Wednesday night before Christmas recess. Finance Minister Abbott said he informed British Chancellor Richard Butler he hopes to attend next month's Commonwealth finance ministers conference in Australia with the deal approved. Prime Minister Churchill disclosed he warned the French at Bermuda of the gravity of the situation over failure to ratify the European army plan. He said the Bermuda meeting with President Eisenhower aimed to press for security guarantees from the West for Soviet Russia at the Big Four foreign ministers conference in Berlin.
Churchill affirmed efforts to nourish Anglo American friendship and co operation. He stated to Premier Lau at the meeting Britain would keep troops on the Continent at least as long as the Americans remain there. He praised Eisenhower's UN atomic address as a crucial event.
A special citizens forum heard Finance Chairman Ed Mc Combs say the proposed dual subway and pedestrian underpass for Medicine Hat will be funded by existing railway gate costs, not new taxes. The $14,000 annual city share covers the project, with a $175,000 to $200,000 loan and 20 year debentures. The bylaw, requiring a two thirds vote, is set for January 11, with split questions debated earlier.
