Winnipeg dispatch reports a tourist coach on Canadian Pacific train No 4 bound for Toronto catching fire after Leaving Winnipeg at 10 pm. Thirteen passengers are missing though some may have escaped to other cars. Eight rescued passengers are slightly injured.
Vancouver report Walter C Findlay former provincial prohibition commissioner pleaded guilty in police court to illegally importing liquor into British Columbia. He was sentenced to a $2000 fine or six months imprisonment after dismissal from office last week by the provincial government.
London reports say the public sees Lloyd George as best fitted for reconstruction after victory. The campaign was dull with no clear basis for result estimates due to factors like women’s votes, labor influence, Asquith loyalists, and absentee soldiers. Soldiers abroad show apathy toward the election.
The recall petition was received by the city clerk with 110 signatures. Verification will determine if 186 per cent of voters signed, leading to a city council election within 30 to 40 days after certification. Other dispatches say Roumanians have disarmed and interned Mackenzen's rearguard as winter relocations bring thirty new families and about 860 prairie laborers to the town.
London dispatch reports the British Premier of Germany declined knowing any legal method to confiscate Hohenzollern currencies and said the focus is on fixing guilt for the war. He stated separation from the former emperor and an optimistic view tempered by limits on influence over events and the need for bread to avoid famine in Germany.
Ottawa notes mark one year since the Union government formed after victory at the polls. Parliament is expected back in February with Sir Robert Borden not likely to attend the opening, his return depending on overseas events.

New York December 17 Major General Enoch Crowder told retiring members of 180 New York draft boards that the selective service system should become permanent for raising American armies. He praised the draft’s success registering 23 740 000 men and deploying nearly 3 000 000 fighters, arguing a return to voluntarism would be calamitous.
Mayor Brown outlines a city government reform for Medicine Hat moving from three aldermen per committee to one per department. The change aims for efficiency, speed, and economy, with a City Hall administration and five department heads overseeing Police Fire Markets Cemetery Treasurer Assessor Tax Collector Engineer Public Building Utilities.
