In Dover a juror named Dorothy Uwanawich faced a defences objection over her surname sounding like you want a witch. The juror listed as psychic adviser. prosecutors dropped the case before trial saying she might have psychic powers.
Ottawa reports a tentative settlement between the federal government and the Inuit of the Northwest Territories creating Nunavut a vast new eastern Arctic territory. The 17 500 Inuit would receive 580 million dollars over 14 years plus title to 350 000 square kilometres and rights to hunt fish and trap nationwide within the territory. Legislation to form Nunavut and ratify the claim will be introduced in Parliament as the western half of the Northwest Territories is renamed. ratification by Parliament and Inuit vote remains required.
Francine Lalonde of the Parti Quebecois says a sovereign Quebec would negotiate for its share of Canada’s armed forces and related assets, promising jobs for Quebec-born service personnel. A federal spokesman notes Ottawa aims to avoid such negotiations, while Premier Bourassa’s Liberals may disagree.
A Medicine Hat woman Elisa Lynn Jacobson and her common law husband Dean Godfrey Nyberg were charged Sunday with murder in the death of her two year old daughter Ashli Jacobson.
