In Brooks Alberta the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 740 P says Lakeside Packers workers remain on strike after walking off in June 1984. About 22 of 83 original members still picket the site on the Trans-Canada Highway as talks stall and union officials seek comment from business agent Norm LeClaire.
In Edmonton Alberta Gainers Inc workers voted 61 percent to accept a contract freezing wages for two years. About 846 United Food and Commercial Workers Union members will likely return to work Tuesday as replacements are sent home. The deal imposes no raise for two years and caps 1989 and 1990 increases at three percent, while preserving a pension fund surplus of six to ten million dollars.
Reuters and The Miami Herald report that money from Iran arms sales may have funded media campaigns and campaigns against lawmakers opposing aid to the Contras. Senator Laxalt and White House officials weigh testimony as Reagan’s approval falters. The Post cites CIA knowledge of Contras funding while denying direct CIA involvement.
Government records under the access law show Prime Minister Mulroney’s foreign trips cost Canadian taxpayers about 800 percent more per night than Trudeau’s similar visits 1983 to 1986. Inflation rose 16 percent in the period, and Mulroney traveled with up to 70 aides, unlike Trudeau’s 24.
Philip BoydingS of St. Catharines Ontario is detained in Iran on espionage charges for allegedly photographing sensitive military regions. An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said the investigation continues and no trial date has been set.
Maclean’s reports a March 1986 memo told Chase Manhattan Bank to find consulting work for Robert Shea, a Boston businessman and Mulroney friend, for two Cape Breton projects. The contract was never awarded as talks stalled with Nova Scotia.
