Americans charged after hashish seizure in Canada
Seven Americans were charged after RCMP seized more than 600 pounds of hashish valued at about 3 million dollars in a major operation near Red Deer. The suspects, including Denver residents Michael Overstreet and Danny Zink, were remanded to December 20. The haul originated in Afghanistan and was routed through Frankfurt and Toronto to Edmonton before heading toward a Denver destination. Police described a lengthy, coordinated effort with 60 officers and 30 vehicles, including a high speed chase and the seizure of an American-registered plane near red deer Penhold.

Senior citizens relieved of medicare premiums
EDMONTON CP Alberta's senior citizens will be relieved of paying medical care insurance premiums effective Jan 1. Under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Act regulations all residents aged 65 or over and their dependents will be included. The cabinet also approved a premium exemption from optional services such as drugs and other procedures. The change will affect about 158 000 Albertans or 9.32 percent of the population and costs are estimated at 6 to 8 million dollars annually. Premier Peter Lougheed said the move shows higher priority to seniors and will replace lower priority programs without increasing overall operating expenditures.
