Canada aims to keep NATO unity by proposing to leave the multilateral nuclear force idea in discussion and develop it further. Prime talks with France favor avoiding US controlled force, with Martin seeking closer European nuclear participation through existing NATO channels.
Four Western military attaches are being withdrawn from their posts in Moscow after Soviet restrictions. Three Americans and one Briton were denied travel since a Sept. 26 search at Khabarovsk. The U S and British spokesmen say the officials were not declared persona non grata. The Soviets were informed the action would occur within a week.
Israel's prime minister Levi Eshkol resigns after a cabinet meeting amid pressure from David Ben-Gurion over the Lavon affair. He may stay as caretaker leader until new elections next summer. Pinchas Lavon previously resigned as defence minister in 1955 over related allegations.
The Medicine Hat Rotary Club approved a 4150 dollar memorial trust for Harry Hutchings who died Sept 23. One thousand goes to the junior college library and 150 to a 1965 scholarship, with 3000 to be managed by three trustees for future grants. Proceeds come from the club’s service account.
Senator Barry Goldwater singled out Richard Nixon as the leading potential Republican candidate for the 1968 nomination. He also cited Governors Mark Hatfield of Oregon George Romney of Michigan and William Scranton of Pennsylvania as possible contenders. Goldwater said Nixon has the biggest hand on the wheel as of now.
