Reports from Hankow and Shanghai say observers judge the Panay bombing on the Yangtze as clearly deliberate. The attack followed multiple passes beginning at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, despite flags and signals on the Panay.
King George marked his 42nd birthday at Buckingham Palace with cannons from Hyde Park the Tower of London and Windsor. An official honors list will be published June 9 next year. A children’s Christmas party was held for Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret and their playmates at the palace.
Edmonton reports that Northern Alberta Railways will inaugurate a tri weekly passenger service to Dawson Creek and Hines Creek in the Peace River country. The new schedule, starting soon, will run from Edmonton on Monday Wednesday and Friday replacing the former twice weekly service.
Calgary dentist Dr Fred L Bass died today as the second victim of monoxide gas from a basement vent. His wife Lena died earlier and daughter Dorothy, 24, remained in hospital while Norma discovered the tragedy and another daughter. Dorothy was near full recovery and visited her father.
The League of Nations in Geneva reminded Italy that resignation cannot take effect for two years under the covenant. Italy must continue paying dues during this period, and only after two years’ notice and fulfillment of international obligations may it withdraw from the League.
Philadelphia report describes a calm 20 year old killer who shot Mrs. V. Carpenter 38 and attacked Miss Mary Griffin 22, then bathed before fleeing. Police seek the assailant as details of the double assault emerge.
Regina reports the Rowell commission hears B. J. McDaniel argue rural municipalities could regain function only if senior governments relieve them of burdens from debt and operational load. He cites tax exemptions on lands held for Soldier Settlement and Prairie Rehabilitation as ongoing issues affecting local governance and funding.
British officials and newspapers urged a solid Anglo American front as Japan pressed the Yangtze crisis. The Panay sinking prompted US demands for apology and compensation while Tokyo sent a note backing Roosevelt's terms. Refugees from the Panay faced renewed danger amid Chinese resistance and Japanese advances toward Nanking and Hangchow.
Mayor Bullivant was re elected for his thirteenth consecutive year defeating Hector Lang 994 to 881 by a majority of 113 votes. Alderman Calder was re elected with 1314 votes. Retiring aldermen were re elected led by Pratt with 1526 votes Warham 1431 Calder 1414 and Marshall 0.
Immigration officials announced that Canadian nurses may no longer enter the United States to practice unless they come as regular immigrants. The order follows complaints that Canadian workers entered on visitors’ permits to work in hospitals, displacing American nurses. Canadian nurses already in the country may stay until their permits expire.
A severe blizzard in Scotland and northern England killed a girl hiker, stranded travelers, and disrupted communications. A 50 mile per hour gale broke the Normandie’s anchor off the Isle of Wight, forcing the liner to seek open water and land 8,000 bags of Christmas mail at Southampton.
R. C. Marshall president of the Alberta and Northwest Chamber of Mines returns from a tour of Eastern Canada and the United States predicting very rapid Edmonton area growth in the next five years. He meets mining officials with L. E. Dimmonss in Toronto and Ottawa and praises MP James A. MacKinnon and Alberta Minister N. E. Tanner for northern development support.
Rt. Hon. R. B. Bennett, Conservative Leader, arrived back in Ottawa on Saturday following a tour of the west. In other news the Belfast steamship Annaghen sank off the Irish coast Saturday with the loss of nine lives. Major-General G G H Irving, chief of the Australian general staff in 1935, died in Melbourne aged 16.
In northern England two people died of exposure while two track workers were killed in a related incident. A Royal Air Force plane crash resulted in four fatalities and a sailor was lost after a man overboard incident in the Irish Sea.
Regina report shows Senioraamey General T C Davis doubts Canada rail mergers will cut costs and fears a merged system could eclipse the government. Saskatch ewan freight rates and tariffs are discussed by Chairman N I Rowell with emphasis on protecting eastern Canada.
E L Gray, Alberta Liberal leader, broadcast in Calgary says Liberals may co operate or unite with anti Aberhart Social Credit groups only if policy agreement is reached. He warns against federal issues entering Alberta politics and calls for independence from federal direction. He outlines three points for cooperation: maintain party identity, create a non partisan advisory council, and form a reconstruction government.
The Japanese freighter Shunsho Maru docked at Victoria with a smouldering fire at the bottom of 130 tons of coal in her bunkers. The vessel was outbound to the Orient when the fire was discovered about 200 miles off the British Columbia coast.
Edmonton December 14 delegates from the Union of Municipalities of Alberta presented to Premier Aberhart at the 1937 convention. The delegation included Mayor Andrew Davison of Calgary and Mayor J. Fry of Edmonton among others. A resolution urged a public works program to relieve municipal burdens by providing work and wages, aiming to spur improvements and economic relief.
At 5 26 p m yesterday the fire brigade was dispatched to Box 51 at the corner of Eight Street and First Avenue by a false alarm.
Training of Trans-Canada Airlines personnel continues in Winnipeg as officials caution on the western leg start date. Officials hope to launch in a month or so while Montreal to Vancouver and Winnipeg to Vancouver timelines remain tentative. Colyer says pilots are being trained day and night as preparations proceed for an official start next year.
The 30 year old Mme Jeanne Keller, named as the sixth victim of Eugene Weidmann, was found today in a shallow grave in a Fontainebleau forest cave. Police denied reports that Montreal man Thomas Brown was among Weidmann’s victims.
