Gas rate hold sparks political clash in city budget

Alderman Kathy Mandeville criticizes a decision to hold gas rates for next year as political and unnecessary. The utilities committee approved operating and capital budgets while the gas rate increase was dropped from four percent. Mandeville Supports Gas Rate Increase Amid Budget Talks

Mandeville argues a regular gas rate rise would be a sound business move to balance the budget. A four percent hike would add about 290000 to the department’s 46.5 million budget, while reserves rise 55 percent to 8.6 million despite lower contracted gas purchases. Mandeville cautions the change remains a political choice and predicts possible larger increases next year.
