Ottawa reports Prime Minister Trudeau says cabinet’s override of the anti inflation board in the postal workers contract will not weaken restraints policy. A royal assent for the bill is planned, with a special administrator and an appeals tribunal to handle excessive- pay rulings.
Statistics Canada reported a nine tenths rise in the consumer price index for November driven by higher housing transportation and food costs. Urban Affairs Minister Barney Dawson announced higher price ceilings for government subsidized home ownership. The Canadian Automobile Association urged lower highway speeds to conserve energy. Cabinet held an unusual night sitting and was expected to overrule an anti infl ation board decision on a postal workers pay award. The Commons meets at 11 a.m. EST to debate a bill on stabilizing western grain farmer incomes. Senate adjourns until Monday at 8 p.m.
British Columbia election returns show Social Credit under Bill Bennett winning a strong majority, taking 36 of 55 seats while the NDP drops to 17 and the Liberals and Conservatives fall to one seat each. Premier Barrett concedes as BC politics shift from reform to a polarized two party landscape.
In Ottawa the welfare committee backed a bill to broaden AHOP and raise payments to some rental builders. The move, urged by Urban Affairs Minister Barney Dawson, aims to avoid a January delay and keep the housing program moving before the Christmas recess. NDP critic John Gilbert warned the measure reduces rent protections in subsidized units.
After six weeks of negotiations Medicine Hat School District 76 teachers approve a nine per cent salary hike for 1976. The contract was announced by Jim Anderson and Les Cluff with ATA representative for 292 members. The vote was 221 to nine with many agreeing by phone.
Four IRA gunmen released hostages in a central London apartment after six days and surrendered two hours later following police negotiations. Sheila Matthews, 53, escaped the final release before the surrender. her husband John, 54, was freed alongside the gunmen. Scotland Yard refused safe conduct to Dublin amid ongoing anti terror investigations.
Premier Peter Lougheed outlined plans to introduce spring legislation to restrict land ownership by non-resident foreigners, contingent on federal amendments to the Citizenship Act and resolution of a jurisdictional issue with Ottawa. He warned the limit on foreign ownership over federal decisions is unsatisfactory but said study results due in 1976 will guide final steps.
