A heavily armed elderly man who shot a woman in the face and engaged police during a standoff fatally shot himself after police entered his Calgary home. The 19 year old victim remains in hospital in stable condition. A Catholic priest was brought in without success to defuse the siege.
The embattled Canadian Red Cross urged the federal inquiry to demand compensation for all Canadians infected by bad blood including future cases. More than 12 000 victims are believed infected with hepatitis C from the blood supply. Ottawa pays 30 000 a year for life. the Krever inquiry hears final submissions with a report due April 30.
Fremont Press notes a house fire Monday possibly started by mice from droppings chewed wires in a water pumphouse attached to the residence. Fire marshal David Blaquiere says damaged wiring and rodent problems were found at the scene.
Psychologist Rudi Bailey urged Medicine Hat City Council to ban under 16s from bingo halls. The advisory board agreed to revisit the issue next year after October failed 4 4 vote. Non profit groups warn bans threaten bingo income used to aid kids and programs.
