A Toronto mosque leader demanded an apology from External Affairs Minister Barbara McDougall after Canada welcomed Salman Rushdie, whom he described as an enemy of Islam. Rushdie has lived in hiding for two years since Iran issued a death decree over The Satanic Verses.
The Medicine Hat Public Library banned Madonna's 128 page photographic book amid censorship debate. Seven of nine board members voted to remove it, despite an ethics call for intellectual freedom and an open access policy. Critics say the explicit content promotes violence and is inappropriate for minors, while the librarian defends policy and notes staff had not circulated the book. 24 holds remain on the volume as debate continues.
Ottawa reports Canada will withdraw 575 troops from Cyprus next year ending 28 years of UN peacekeeping. Withdrawal starts in June and finishes by September.
