Hungarian refugee recalls malnutrition in forced labor camps

A 27-year-old Hungarian engineer and photographer describes harsh conditions in Soviet-backed labor camps near Hungary. He says 10 to 12 hour days, 600 florins monthly paid to the war ministry, damp rooms, and thousands died from malnutrition and overwork. He and two other youths fled after the uprising began.

Averted Destruction of St. Marys School Fire Near Under Construction

Alex MacKenzie spotted flames at 12 20 am leaping along the side of the $300 000 St Marys school under construction. A broken gas line elbow allowed gas to enter the furnace room and feed the blaze but the flames were extinguished after firefighters shut off the gas, saving the building from a likely blast.

Medicine Hat gas export hearing set for January 15

The conservation board spent half an hour on gas withdrawal allowances while Saskatchewan Power seeks to export natural gas from the Medicine Hat field. City of Medicine Hat opposed the export, with special counsel to back opposition groups to press for an export ban affecting nearby municipalities. Irvine favors export and asks for gas from the new grid system. Britalta holds mineral rights east of Medicine Hat toward the Saskatchewan line.
