Belleville Ont Dec 10 Sir Mackenzie Bowell died at 7 40 pm after a weeklong illness He was born December 27 1824 in Rickinghall England and came to Canada in 1833 He built a long career from printer to editor owner of the Belleville Intelligencer and served in the House of Commons from 1866 later in the Senate as Conservative leader He held cabinet posts including minister of customs militia and trade and commerce He helped organize the second intercolonial conference leading to the imperial conference in London 1894 He was knighted and was a long serving public figure a veteran of the Fenian raid and sometime Orange Order leader He died a few days before his 92nd birthday with sons and colleagues in attendance.
Telegraph message from the Director of Records reports Private George Stanley Bowen of the Infantry admitted to the 416900 casualty clearing station with a gunshot wound to the right thigh on December 2, 1917. Mrs. J. Moore received the notification.
A wounded carrier pigeon found near a burned arena window carried a German message. Identified as New York No 29 the bird was turned to Dartmouth’s chief of police who would not comment on delivery to military authorities. The woman who found it said the bird appeared exhausted seeking shelter.
An Associated Press despatch from London reports The Daily Star splashes with Lloyd George’s ban ner as opposition grows in the House of Commons. Parliament is described as worn out and drifted, pacifists gaining strength, and loyalty thinning, signaling a possible government fall if an occasion arises.
Foreign Secretary Balfour told the House of Commons that Germany sent a peace communication to Britain last September through a neutral channel. Britain said it would receive and discuss any German proposal with allies, but Germany gave no reply.

A party of 25 returned soldiers arrives in Calgary at 5 30 tomorrow by a special train. The group is divided among cities with 65 bound for Calgary, 17 for Victoria, and 148 for Vancouver.
Louis Beyer, brought before the Police Court yesterday for failing to produce a military service registration certificate, has been turned over to military authorities and escorted to Calgary this morning.
Edmonton voters chose M. Evans, brother of Sanford Evans, as mayor by a margin over 2000. Evans won more than half the votes amid a bitterly cold day with low turnout. Alderman counts were not complete, with several nominees likely elected and some by acclamation on the south side.
