Explosion destroys Quaker Oats plant in Peterborough

An explosion due to spontaneous combustion in the engine room of the Quaker Oats plant in Peterborough Ontario collapsed the building at 10 30 this morning burying at least 12 workers and igniting a blaze that is consuming the facility. Twelve employees were hospitalized and officials fear others are buried or dead in the debris.

Jesse Willard to Spend Christmas Week in Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat will host celebrity Christmas week with Jesse Willard world heavyweight champion arriving to spend the festive season with his brother G B Willard at the Assiniboia Hotel. G B Willard, a Montana cattleman, is negotiating a local ranch purchase. A stenographer and governess are being sought as adverts note a show planned at the Empress theatre soon.

Navy Volunteer Reserve Recruit Chas Murray Joins

Mr Chas Murray signs up at Capt Parker's recruiting office on Saturday to join the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. A well known Medicine Hat resident he works as a fireman for the C P R and has lived in town seven or eight years.

Lloyd George ill with severe chill delays seals of office

London reports Premier Lloyd George is ill and stayed indoors after a severe chill, delaying his appearance to receive seals of office from King George. Officials note he will form a government and push wartime aims, with Bonar Law to move adjournment Thursday. 150 C A M C Recruits Honored by Medicine Hat Sons of England

In Medicine Hat on December 10 1916 150 C A M C recruits were treated to coffee and sandwiches at the C E hall before continuing east. Sergt Major Whiteoak kept the group in suspense about hosts, then revealed the Sons of England welcome. Local volunteers and businesspeople provided refreshments at reduced prices and attendees applauded the gesture.

Windsor House Fire in Prince Albert Destroys Hotel

Fire at Windsor House in Prince Albert Sask discovered at seven this morning destroyed the structure within hours. Estimated loss $50,000. Forty guests evacuated with belongings, some lost items. Windsor House owned by B Clemons and well known regionally as a commercial and family hostelry. Also notes death of Joseph Alfred Gendron, founder of a Toronto bicycle manufacturer, in Ottawa.
