Alberta announces 10 million irrigation aid program

Premier Don Getty says the Alberta government will spend 10 million dollars on the Alberta Private Irrigation Assistance Program to help private projects. The plan will offset half the cost of conveying water up to 100 dollars per irrigated acre and 30 thousand dollars per project, aiding more than 100 000 hectares and affecting over 250 000 acres. Effective April 1 1989 eligible projects include those with interim licenses.

Saskatchewan warns of farm economy hit from failed trade talks

Regina reports provincial Trade Minister Bob Andrew warns that failure of global agricultural subsidy talks could seriously hurt Saskatchewan's farm based economy. Military denies chemical dumping by Canadian Forces

Ottawa reports of chemical agent shells dumped at sea were rejected by military spokesmen. Col. Miaikowski said surplus explosive shells were dumped in the Pacific and Atlantic until the early 1970s, but none contained chemical warfare agents. Veteran Thomas alleged 1947 dumps of shells to Vancouver Island area. investigators found no evidence of chemical shells.
