Mussel toxin poisoning claims Montreal man

A 71-year-old Montreal man, Albert Pomeroy, died in Montreal General Hospital twelve days after eating mussels from Prince Edward Island contaminated with an unknown toxin. Several others remain seriously ill while at least 75 cases have been reported across weeks. In Calgary an elderly woman also fell ill after consuming poisoned mussels, with the illness confirmed by Dr. Brent Friesen.

Settlement near for Lubicon land claim in Alberta

CALGARY The federal and Alberta governments near a settlement of the Lubicon Lake Indian band land claim. Negotiator Brian Malone said talks with Alberta are advanced and optimistic for at least a partial or interim settlement by year end without Lubicon consultation.
