Hartford AP report describes a Hartford Hospital fire on a ninth floor trash chute that killed 13 people and trapped more than 160 others. Six patients, five visitors and four staff died amid charred corridors and debris as officials investigate possible causes such as cigarette or gas leaks. An investigation followed a six hour hearing.
West German Chancellor Adenauer arrived in Paris for discussions with President de Gaulle on early negotiations with the Soviet Union over Berlin. de Gaulle remains cool to American ideas, while France resists precipitate talks under Soviet threats and questions probes of Soviet intentions.
Fighting in Elisabethville enters its fifth day as Ikatangan troops regroup for a last stand while UN airlift of troops and armor from Leopoldville intensifies. Casualties run high with 100 to 120 Katanga soldiers dead and UN losses of three. skirmishes focus on the post office and a road tunnel as Tshombe condemns UN action and warns of Communist influence.
Medicine Hat residents may glimpse the Liberal party leadership race as Bryce Stringam Rosemary Hastings David Hunter and Earl Hastings attend a Thursday meeting at 8 pm in the city. Hunter has accepted and others likely will. The provincial leadership convention is set for Calgary January 11 to 13.

Dr Marcel Chaput resigned from defence work to pursue Quebec independence. Fidel Castro proclaimed himself a Marxist Leninist as Kennedy called for new trade policy tools.
A downtown Calgary fire destroys a provincial government office in a row of damaged buildings where seven people died in the November fire. Firefighters faced 10 below weather as the three alarm blaze burned for hours, with no injuries reported but staff evacuated. The Cameron Block demolition continues nearby.
