Jumped Into Jail Furnace in Despair at Hastings County Jail

The body of John Johnson, 58, a longtime Champion resident born in Sweden, was brought to town Tuesday night after his wagon and team became stranded in a snowstorm while he headed to Champion for coal. The coroner was informed but an inquest is unlikely. His sisters remain grief-stricken as the community mourns the popular settler who lived with hospitality and had moved from Duluth about 15 years ago.
