German trenches were occupied along most of the front with a mine destroying one Allied trench. Meuse heights show Allied artillery control and progress across the region including La Petre and the Argonne. In the Vosges northwest of Sinones several enemy assaults were repulsed.
Allied shells opened heavy fire from the coast to the Lys and in the Aisne area. French forces report gains in the Argonne and along the Aisne with artillery exchanges favoring the Allies while German trenches are captured. The high seas action yields British claims of sinking German cruisers Scharnhorst Gnisenau Leipzig and Dresden.
The Dominion Railway Commission met in City Hall with D Arcy Scott and A S Goodeve to consider a petition for an overhead bridge at Ottawa Street and to review Red Cliff Board of Trade's bid to drop C P R switching charges. Mayor Bott represented Redcliff as Lannigan defended the railroad, and the commission reserved judgment, ordering three months of plan and cost preparation before a public vote if approved.
President Poincarre and Premier Viviani arrive in Paris from Bordeaux accompanied by officials. Foreign minister and diplomatic corps members to follow later in the day.
Winnipeg jurors found Harry Mason guilty of murder in the October 28 killing of J. J. Mecolm, a local fuel dealer. The body was found beside a St. Boniface road. He faces sentencing later. Grace Boggs’ trial will proceed separately.
Pretoria reports General Beyers, rebel leader, was killed during a clash on the Vaal River. He reportedly fell from his horse as bullets flashed and his body drifted downstream, with a search underway for the missing corpse. Beyers was the last rebel leader at large.
Grace Williams Thelma Swan and Mazie Kerby three ladies from the underworld paid 100 dollars and costs each for violation of the Liquor License Act and selling liquor without a license. They were tried by Inspector Shoebotham.
A local ad offers to reserve any requested item with a small upfront deposit. The seller identifies as Knight and Baznayr and promises secure holding of chosen goods.
Mayor Bott of Redcliff, speaking for the Redcliff Board of Trade, presented two cases before Railway Commissioners in city hall. They argued switching charges discriminate against Redcliff industries seeking east and south freight, and claimed a higher rate than Medicine Hat.
The Ratepayers Association held the first public meeting to contest vacant municipal seats at Elm Street school. Ald. Penland and other candidates spoke, defending positions and answering charges while Mayor Brown faced criticism and discipline from the chair.
The Ratepayers' Association meets at Montreal Street school to discuss city welfare. Mayoralty candidate Al Hawthorne and other speakers will attend, and the public is welcome.
Telegraph reports from Berlin, forwarded by Amsterdam, say Emperor Wilhelm II is ill with pneumonia and nervous low mood from overexertion. Doctors advise staying away from the front.
The Medicine Hat Young Liberals organized a local club at city hall with Norman A. Melarty as president and C. W. Smith as secretary treasurer. Officers include Sir Wilfrid Laurier and A. L. Sifton as honorary presidents and an executive committee led by Gordon Fraser and Hector Lang. The group discussed club quarters and logistics for a permanent location.
Vancouver December 9 The Bank of Vancouver left the Clearing House Association of Banks today but continued operations with no apparent run on branches. The bank faces possible closure depending on other banks' stance following the Dominion Trust failure which caused a large withdrawal of patronage. Small picture frames and doll carriages advertised at Knight's Bazaar.
Rome reports Prince Von Baelow says Idea Nazionale dispatches authorized to negotiate Trent’s cession to Italy in exchange for Italian neutrality. Austria may announce Trent independence to justify Italy’s occupation, with possible protection for Trieste. Trent, in Tyrol, has an Italian-speaking silk industry and hosts historic city of Trent.
W Williams, local secretary of the Belgian Relief Fund, reports a letter from Hector Prud homme of Montreal stating urgent need for funds to buy wheat for a fourth steamer load. About 160000 is required. donations via cheque or cash sent by mail will be acknowledged after receipt.
