Torrential rains and gale winds isolate Kitimat Terrace and Stewart area in northwestern British Columbia. Edward Shade, 34, of Stewart, was killed by a mud slide. Dave Mengehehlle, also of Stewart, was injured. Roads and communications were severed, with only a microwave link keeping a tenuous connection.
President Eisenhower lands in Karachi for a 43-hour stay amid a 11-country goodwill tour. Ayub Khan greets him with a large crowd and a 21-gun salute as talks on Kashmir, China’s influence, India tensions, and economic aid loom.
Two Prince Rupert men returning from a hunting trip in the Terrace area abandoned their pickup Saturday night after it rolled into a 10 foot deep and 30 foot wide crater on Highway 16. They reached a cabin, spent the night, and the truck was found Sunday. Crews worked to reopen the Terrace Prince Rupert and Prince Rupert Kitimat sections as sleepers. CNR expected rail service to resume. a Phelan slide cut wires and a Salvus slide blocked roads and CNR routes. No injuries reported.
Winds reaching 55 miles per hour toppled telephone and telegraph poles and caused widespread damage in Terrace. Flooded basements polluted water supplies while residents used canoes to move. Civil Defence Coordinator Peter Read said emergency standby was activated and Highway 16 near Terrace was washed out for 24 hours with 50 by 30 foot slide. The weather office warned of another storm not expected to bring heavy rain.
Pearl Harbor observances in Hawaii mark the 18th anniversary of the 1941 attack. Lieutenant-Governor James Kealoha urged renewed resolve to keep the nation prepared. A ceremony on a platform above the sunken Arizona recalled 1,102 sailors lost in the raid. James Kealoha and Tokyo diplomat Kichisa Nomura are cited in reflections on the conflict.
State police identified Howard Aiken age 39 of Springfield and Mark Tobin a Fellows Gear Saper Co representative as two of the three aboard the Piper Apache when it crashed en route from Manchester to Springfield. Norman Paulhus 34 of Charlestown was injured but escaped through woods to reach help. The twin engine craft had completed about two thirds of the 35 minute flight. Senator George D Aiken was informed and traveled by car from Montpelier to Springfield.
Catania Sicily AP reports Mount Etna erupted producing a third new crater on its north flank after a week of ash plumes. The new vents lie several hundred yards below the central cone which remains inactive as rocks and smoke billow from the summit area.
Strong winds swept glowing ashes into straw bales at the David Calderwood farm near Granum, destroying the two story house valued at about 15000 dollars. The blaze began from ashes in a container and spread through winter insulation as flames damaged outbuildings. Granum lies roughly 35 miles northwest of Lethbridge.
Robert Raymond Cook, 23, testified he certainly didn’t kill his father at the Supreme Court in Red Deer. He described his movements after prison release, past burglary of a Bowden treasury branch, and acquiring his father’s wallet to trade in a family wagon for a new car. He said his family was alive when he left for Edmonton.
In Louisiana, Governor Earl K. Long faltered as voters backed Mayor Desseps Morrison and ex governor Jimmie H. Davis for the runoff. Long placed third behind Aycock, with Morrison leading Davis 261,468 to 194,995 as 95 percent of precincts reported. The second primary will decide the governor on January 9. Aycock and Alexandria Mayor George Bowden will contest the lieutenant governor race.
Four boys aged 9 to 12 from Springhill Nova Scotia went rabbit hunting and were missing overnight. About 65 people searched, and the group found them early morning crying under a tree exhausted but safe. Eldred Lowther, father of two boys, was among the searchers. he previously escaped a 1958 mine disaster.
