Ottawa reports Prime Minister Trudeau plans discussions with U S leaders before Christmas. Reagan's Moscow trip remains uncertain. Ralph Coleman says Trudeau will seek a meeting after mid December to arrange talks.
Police report most of the 11 million dollar ransom for brewery chief Freddie Heineken was recovered from plastic barrels buried in a Dutch forest near Utrecht. Two hikers uncovered hundreds of one hundred dollar bills and investigators dug up three fifths of the total payment. Three suspects remain at large abroad and in the Netherlands.
City officials consider trimming a proposed 20 percent natural gas rate hike to cover an expected $4.5 million drop in provincial gas flowback revenue. Utilities Chair Alderman Ken Sauer says savings efforts aim to minimize the increase, with a $1.2 million extra revenue projected and no public hearing scheduled.
Syria reports it shot down two Israeli reconnaissance drones over Bekaa and Lebanon. Beirut radio cites multinational force jets over Syrian bases in central Lebanon. In Jerusalem a bus bombing kills four and injures 46, claimed by the PLO. Arafat loyalists prepare to depart Tripoli.
In Quebec byelections Liberal candidates won both rural Megantic-Compton and PQ heartland Jonquiere. Madeleine Belanger defeated PQ by 7,530 votes in Megantic-Compton, while Aline Saint-Amand won Jonquiere by 1,273 votes. Voter turnout neared 70 percent as PQ losses extend to 18 straight byeelection defeats.
Washington AP report notes Reagan aides wary that ongoing Marines in Lebanon could hurt his 1984 chances. Some advisers favor quick withdrawal, polls show public disapproval growing, and eight Democratic candidates voiced concern after weekend clashes and an eight Marines death. Death toll in Lebanon reached 254 by Monday.
In Queen's Bench Calgary a tearful Eileen Obama defends naturopath Scot Olson charged with manslaughter in Robin Obama's death after a nasal balloon burst during a treatment. She says she never blamed Olson and details her daughter's eight month, 70 sessions at $40 each. Continued on Page 20.
