Statistics Canada reports seasonally adjusted unemployment at 8.4 per cent, a postwar high, with 53 000 more jobless to 840 000. Actual rate 7.9 per cent, 9 830 000 employed, and 61.4 per cent of working age in the labor force or seeking work.
Alberta's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate reached 4.7 percent in November, up from 4.3 percent in October. A spokesman said the rise reflects unskilled labor migration from other provinces and seasonal construction slowdowns. The province's workforce grew to 901,000, up 3,000 since October, while employment stood at 859,000, unchanged from October.
The federal RCMP inquiry into the extent and prevalence of illegal RCMP activity opened in Montreal. Chair Justice David C. McDonald of Alberta Supreme Court pledged open hearings and read a 5,000 word prepared statement outlining the inquiry's scope.

Two soldiers were killed when an old civil defence fire engine crashed into a gasoline station in a Manchester suburb while racing to answer a false alarm. Four soldiers were wounded as striking firemen left picket lines to reach the scene. The incident comes amid a nationwide firemen strike over pay and ongoing union action.

A 19 year old Harvey Collins of Manhattan stole a car from a Vermont honeymoon couple and drove down 42nd Street near Times Square killing a man and injuring 12 others. The vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant before stopping near Seventh Avenue. Collins was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide among other counts.
