In Randolph New York 20 year old Justin Weaver received one write in vote for town judge and won the single year post though no candidate ran and the ballot line was blank. County elections commissioner Linda Milks notes the vote shows one vote can count.
Toronto CBC TV appeals a judge's publication ban and a decision to cancel The Boys of St Vincent. The drama about abuse at church schools faced cancellation before airing Sunday and Monday, with a repeat of Justice Denied scheduled in its place while the Ontario court hearing proceeds.
Steve Fonyo, who raised 13 million for cancer research by running across Canada, says he will plead guilty to impaired driving charges in provincial court. The 27 year old, who lost a leg to cancer, acknowledges a low point and a need to pay the price, after prior convictions in White Rock and Vernon. He was charged with impaired driving on May 28, having a blood alcohol level over the limit and driving while disqualified.
Canadian figures including Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and hockey commentator Don Cherry faced protest as 25 women from the Alliance for Non Violent Action blocked Sussex Drive. They urged Mulroney to wear no ribbon while violence against women continues, and pressed Cherry to don one. Critics say awareness grows but safety hasn’t improved. Memorial remarks at Concordia tied the 1989 Ecole Polytechnique massacre to ongoing fears and calls for action.
At Edmonton city hall and the University of Alberta, about 300 people gathered to remember 14 women killed at L'ecole Polytechnique and to pledge to fight violence against women. Dani Larson, paralyzed by her ex-boyfriend’s attack, attended alongside community leaders urging respect and speaking up against sexism.
A Manitoba Hydro crew ruptured a gas line causing a violent explosion that levelled half a small Portage Avenue strip mall in Winnipeg. Debris flew up to 200 metres as police evacuated 40 people and closed a 1 kilometre stretch. no injuries reported but a coffee shop wall was blown out and a hat salon destroyed.
Albertans vote today to choose between Nancy Betkowski and Ralph Klein in a tight Conservative leadership race to succeed Don Getty. Betkowski, a health minister and Edmonton-born candidate, could become Canada’s second female premier if elected. More than 50,000 Albertans voted last week with high turnout expected.
