In a three hour firefight during freezing snow, police flushed a sniper from a third floor rooming house after shots killed one man and wounded another. The gunman Channel J Dersarkissian, about 48, fired into the street as tear gas and heavy gunfire blasted the building. He was captured after the room caught fire from a hot tear gas canister.
In Brussels Canada won a qualified Allied nod to its NATO force reductions in Europe with ministers noting the positive outcome of talks. The communique expected to urge remdial measures to preserve adequate central European forces, while West Germany and Britain were discussed for offsetting a foreign exchange drain. Discussions also covered readiness for East West talks and a cautious stance on a Warsaw pact European security conference.
Ottawa launches a four member interdepartmental grains group led by Otto Lang to coordinate federal efforts on wheat and other grains. Members span agriculture trade and transport. the group aims to tackle marketing inventory and production bottlenecks without creating a new department. Lang notes potential role for the Canadian Wheat Board and signals focus on foreign sales and domestic handling.
The Viet Cong announced Christmas and New Year truces of three days each, starting December 24 at 1 a.m. and December 30 at 1 a.m., two days longer than the Saigon government’s earlier ceasefires. President Thieu’s 24 hour truces begin at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, with U.S. forces planning to join Thieu’s accord.

A Yugo Slav-born Canadian chemist Dr Alexander Petrunic 57 and his wife Draga of Calgary were believed among 62 killed when an Air France Boeing 707 crashed into the Caribbean after taking off from Caracas Venezuela. The plane flying Bogota to Paris via Caracas Guadeloupe and Lisbon carried 41 passengers 11 crew and 10 Air France personnel. Recovery teams pulled 26 bodies from the sea five miles off the coast as experts studied the wreckage for the crash cause.
Saskatchewan Farmers' Union delegates defeated a motion to aid secession efforts by Western provinces. SFU president Roy Atkinson hailed the defeat, saying secession is political with economic consequences and would hurt socio economic position. He urged unity to strengthen NFU and use resources effectively. Walter Miller warned Alberta farmers are being misinformed about the NFU and predicted personal attacks on Atkinson as the NFU grows.
Los Angeles AP report notes a 21 year old Susan Atkins, linked to the Manson clan, plans to testify to the grand jury about the Sharon Tate killings. Prosecutors seek indictments for Charles Manson and several clan members on murder and conspiracy charges while Atkins waives self incrimination rights.
A kerosene heater explosion sparked a fire in a two story frame house in Clinton South Carolina killing seven sleeping children aged 1 to 12. The family had moved into the dwelling that day.
