RCMP Sgt. Bruce G. Brown retiring after 21 years recalls a Saskatchewan marathon in Fort Qu Appelle 1926 where Medicine Hat Mayor Harry Weiner won the race. Brown, a popular prairie figure, remembers competing against the local mayor at a Calgary farewell party.

Rudolph Slansky and 10 Czechoslovak Communist leaders were executed in Prague after a mass trial. The defendants, many Jews, were convicted of treason and espionage amid virulent anti semitism and claims of a Zionist plot.
Two RCAF jets from Uplands air base dived simultaneously and cracked the sonic barrier near Ottawa. Pilots Keith Booth of Edmonton and Sydney Burrows of New Westminster flew the high speed dives, sounding like a bomb to some residents. The RCAF says a sonic boom is the likely explanation though not confirmed.

On Saturday December 20 shops stay open until 9 p.m. for men's wear, while ladies stores close at normal hours. One of five stores will keep 9 p.m. Saturday hours throughout the month.
The highways department will spread heated sand on the Edmonton Nisku stretch of Highway 2 to improve grip on ice this winter. An earlier Lacombe trial proved successful. In 1950 a dozen fatalities occurred on a one mile segment north of Nisku.

A tree snapped after roughly 15 seconds of restraining a Vancouver to Alberta bus on the Nelson to Creston highway, sending the vehicle over a 100 foot drop into Kootenay Lake.
