Police records show 504 convictions for traffic violations in 1956 and 70 licences suspended for drunken driving carelessness and speeding. Major accidents tally 260 with $57,915 in damages through October, with 46 injuries and several hospitalizations. Safe Driving Week urged to prevent fatalities.
The 1956 record lists excessive speed 170 cases, without due care 6, failing to stop 0, yield right of way 2, and other violations 178. The data appears as a municipal enumeration of infractions with counts for each category.
Winnipeg CP reported Manitoba Traffic Safety Director R B Bailie said October was the blackest month on provincial roads. He warned November may match it. The October fatalities pushed the provincial road death toll for ten months of 1955 to 117, up from 93 in the same period of 1954.
One of four crew members of a B 47 Stratojet was rescued by helicopter after a crash in rugged bush near Nipigon Ontario. Maj Robert M Slane, 33, commander, was identified as a survivor in good condition and transported to Port Arthur hospital. A second crew member reportedly bailed out. Search planes had tracked a cross shaped fire near Seagull Lake before the rescue.

Coroners inquest into the death of Jesse Ross Owen returns an accidental death verdict. The 34 year old mother of five died when a rifle in her husband Douglas Owen's hands fired while they hunted antelope near Manyberries Alberta on the morning of November twenty third 1956.

Detroit resident Harold E K Wangbichler chose to pay a ten dollar fine on Friday rather than five for pants damages. Witness Terry Jenereau showed trousers with two holes he attributed to Wangbichler's Doberman in a dog bite incident, claiming the dog would have caused a basketball sized hole and scars.
