Five hijackers surrendered at Tehran airport to Iranian authorities and 15 hostages freed unhurt. An American couple was among those released. Iran's state agency said the hijackers fired into the air before surrender and all captives were taken to the airport medical facility in good health.
In Tel Aviv Yitzhak Shamir gains the backing of Ariel Sharon as a leading challenger to Menachem Begin. Deputy PM David Levy faces pressure from Herut ministers to quit to smooth a transition while Begin delays resignation, with no decision on succession after two caucus meetings.
The Boeing 727 carrying 10 passengers and seven crew landed in Tehran after a Friday hijack from Vienna to Paris. Hijackers sought asylum in Iran and threatened to blow up the plane as Iranian authorities agreed to a news conference amid stalled negotiations. Ninety three hostages were released during stops in Switzerland, Italy, and Syria.
Ten thousand Lebanese soldiers launched a three pronged assault on West Beirut with house to house fighting. Police reported at least 18 dead and 37 wounded as tanks and helicopters targeted Barbir and Sodice intersections. French soldiers and a French policeman were killed in separate attacks. U S Marines remained on alert while Lebanese commandos secured beachheads near the Cadmus Hotel.
Ottawa's federal Justice Department weighs tax charges against former mines minister Roger Simmons. A front-page Citizen report cites a marked action file and possible recommendations to prosecute by Revenue Canada or Justice. Simmons resigned after cabinet appointment and faces questions over late 1970s income while in Newfoundland politics.
Larry Smith 41 pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the shooting death of Murray Berg 39 in Brooks. Smith believed Berg betrayed his wife and treated him as his best friend while wife claimed Berg lied. Judge Mr Justice C G Yanosik reserved sentencing to Oct 12.
Dick Knight has resigned as general manager of the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede. Stampede board president Bill Palmer said the executive accepted Knight's letter during a special Tuesday afternoon meeting. The resignation is effective September 2 and Knight noted he was hired for a five month contract to evaluate long-term commitment.
Montreal uses 200 Denver boots to immobilize offenders amid legal challenges and protests. A lawyer won a ruling to restore a taxi owner's car after it was clamped, while Aznavour's Bentley was booted prompting calls about fines and towing costs.
