Emerson Porter dies in hospital at 62 in Irvine district
Irvine rancher Emerson Porter long active in local groups died in hospital after a lengthy illness at age 62. Born November 2, 1902 in Medicine Hat he managed the RP Ranch near Irvine since 1923 and helped revive the Medicine Hat Stampede Company. He held leadership roles in Chinook Club Cypress Club and various fraternal orders and is survived by his wife Thelma son Robert sister Clara and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Pattison Funeral Home Ltd.

A grizzly with three cubs seriously mauled 19 year old Edmont on man Fred Sturdy Sunday in Jasper National Park. Diane Davidson of Sudbury Ont was treated for shock after fainting and released. Alberta Western Beef plant reopening uncertain

Encephalitis suspected in two hospital deaths
Dr F J McArdle of Medicine Hat Health Unit said two patients died in hospital Saturday from suspected encephalitis or sleeping sickness. Lab tests will confirm. The victims were an elder and a middle aged man with symptoms of sleepiness fever and headache. He noted seasonal illness patterns and no other suspected cases in the hospital.
