Hon. W R Motterwell former Minister of Agriculture addressed a Liberal gathering at the committee rooms praising Liberal tariff reductions on agricultural implements and motor cars. He discussed election prospects in BC Atlantic provinces Ontario and the West and noted Liberal unity against Meighen.
In Nuremberg on August 31 former Crown Prince Rupprecht, Prince Oscar, and Field Marshal von Mackensen led a nationalist demonstration as 20,000 troops goose-stepped past. War veterans cheered, while republicans watched quietly amid flowers and displays of old army glory.
Louis B. Miller of San Francisco reportedly beat a cross country train by several hours in a private automobile. His time was claimed as 83 hours hours and an average speed stated over 40 miles per hour, noted as remarkable given traffic laws.
The Philippine House of Representatives passed a bill over Governor General Leonard Wood's veto to hold a plebiscite on independence. The Senate had previously moved similarly, with President Coolidge referenced in the report.

Sir Henry Worth Thornton, president and general manager of Canadian National Railways, will marry Miss Martha Watriss of New York in September. Miss Watriss, 25, is daughter of Frederick N. Watriss, VP of International Petroleum Co, and has lived with her mother Mrs. Charles D. Wetmore since her parents’ divorce. She did Red Cross work in France during World War I, where she met Thornton, who served as deputy director of movements and railways.
Two of five elephants escaped from a Cranbrook circus on August 6 remain missing with no sightings for days. Myrtle the yearling fell from a 40 foot embankment and likely hid or was injured. Charlie Ed, a five year old male, escaped while treated for an infected wound and may have died. Indian trackers and local boys roam Cranbrook forest hoping for news.
An express train collided with a motor coach at Naworth level crossing near Carlyle England. Nine people died and three were seriously injured as the coach carrying fifteen passengers, including four women and a boy, was struck while signals were down. The porter opened the gates despite down signals, trying to warn the coach driver before perishing.
London reports the House of Commons approved by 2332 to 91 the continuation of emergency regulations tied to the mining strike. Parliament will debate the coal situation. Labor and Miners Federation executives meet, chaired by Ramsay MacDonald, to prepare for the discussion.
Opening highs failed to hold as prices eased during the Winnipeg wheat session.
