In Northboro Massachusetts 70 year old Dean Firth Squier, described as a kindly grandfather, admitted after a raid netting 50 marijuana plants that he planted the illegal herb to settle a 1986 tax debt of about 40000 dollars. He faces up to 17 years in prison and loss of property if convicted.
Prime Minister Kim Campbell rejects claims of a coverup after the Defence Department disclosed a $15,000 US compensation payment to the family of Shidane Omar Arone who died in Somali custody. Four Canadian peacekeepers face murder and torture charges. Campbell says timing and policy were not altered. Police chiefs in Montreal plan a resolution urging Ottawa to end parole and day passes for violent or drug related offenders, arguing for tougher measures for dangerous criminals.
Jeff Steiner, chief of staff to Defence Minister Tom Siddon, is named Director of Military Vote for Kim Campbell. Liberal critic Rompkey calls it a conflict of interest while Tory argues Steiner will take a leave of absence during the campaign to direct materials to armed forces.
Elite American troops descended on ropes from helicopters at dawn to seize a building housing United Nations personnel in Mogadishu. Three foreign UN workers including a Canadian and five Somali staff were detained briefly as U N officials called it a successful operation. The mission involved more than a dozen helicopters and about 50 troops from U S Rangers and the Quick Reaction Force, their first Somalia deployment. The villa showed shell fragments, shattered windows, and damaged vehicles after the encounter.
A 13 year old Nova Scotia youth, Matthew Jamieson, started a summer hotdog venture in Bear River with a 100 grant from I Want to be a Millionaire. Health inspectors ruled the mobile canteen failed to meet rules for washrooms and running water, ending the business after about three weeks.
Environment Minister Yossi Sarid announced a cabinet vote on a self rule plan for Gaza and Jericho as part of the peace talks. Extremist groups attacked a minister’s home while opposition leader Netanyahu vowed to topple the government and Ahmed Jibril threatened Arafat. A Palestinian council would govern Gaza and Jericho with a later West Bank council to follow.
Alberta leads a national push for compensation to about 85 Albertans infected by tainted blood, including 36 hemophiliacs and nearly 1,000 total victims. A rejected Aug. 10 package offered up to 30,000 over four years plus a 50,000 family lump sum. discussions continue among eight provinces with Quebec and Nova Scotia pursuing their own deals.
