Elevator crash kills laborers in Toronto Bank of Nova Scotia tower

Two labourers were killed when a construction elevator broke a cable and plummeted to the top of a 45 storey Bank of Nova Scotia tower site in downtown Toronto. Witnesses reported a counterweight detached just after the doors closed at ground level near Bay and King Streets.

Woman allegedly led followers to mass suicide in Yongin attic

A woman named Park Soon-ja, 48, who claimed to be a god, persuaded 27 women and 4 men to drink poison and die by their own actions. Police found her and most victims in an attic above a handicraft factory and small school she ran in Yongin, near Seoul.

Aquino Loyalists Crush Coup in Manila

Government forces captured the last mutinous troops at military headquarters after crushing the coup attempt against President Corazon Aquino. Coup leader and hundreds of rebels remained at large while Gen. Fidel Ramos said the Manila area was nearly under control 32 hours after about 800 rebels attacked the presidential compound bases and the state broadcast center.

Rail workers in Medicine Hat return after five day strike derailed

Canada wide rail strike ended by royal assent on Friday. In Medicine Hat five unions halted picketing and workers returned to duty at 3 28 a m after the back to work order became law. First freight trains moved east by 9 a m as CP Rail said operations returned to normal amid 500 angry union members ongoing nearby.

Murder charges planned for two in Woodward case

Medicine Hat police say Calvin Harvey Smoker and Daniel Gingras will face first degree murder and abduction charges in the death of Wanda Lee Woodward who disappeared August 14 and was found south of Medicine Hat. They also face charges for the Aug. 14 armed robbery of a Division Avenue Canada Safeway. Funeral arrangements set for Woodward with details given.
